So as a test I wanted to see how our existing PC's handle 10.

Upgrade existing hardware to 10, or do we buy new PC's. Like I said this was a test and I am in no way condoning anything, but like the OP, I have a decision to make soon. So for the second PC I put in a new hard drive, installed 10 from scratch, and when it asked for the key, I used the Windows 7 Product Key that came with the machine (because I am curious) and the activation worked. My guess (because the free upgrade process is over) is that the upgrade process looked at the Product Key that was embedded into the OEM image, and since it was probably used before somewhere down the line for a free Win 10 upgrade, the activation took. The first PC still had the OEM image that came with it when it was purchased, the upgrade went smooth and it activated just fine. When these PC's were purchased, they all came with Win 7 Pro. I am trying to determine if I should purchase new hardware or use existing hardware since the specs are pretty good still.

Recently I took two Win 7 Pro machines as a test that came from a known company that makes computers, and upgraded them to 10 Pro without any issues. I guess I don't understand why Microsoft still allows it then if it is not supposed to be done.
